Affiliate marketing businesses are what I like to call ecommerce for the rest of us. They are high profit and low risk monetization methods for websites.
- You don’t have to develop your own product.
- You don’t handle shipping and handling.
- You don’t have to take stock of inventory or manage a store.
- You don’t have to handle customer services.
The best part is they can be started and operated on a shoestring budget.
Perhaps the most widely adopted business model is affiliate marketing. According to a recent Forrester Research Inc survey, nearly 80% of online merchants actively use affiliate marketing. However, despite its popularity and simplicity, the sad fact is most affiliate businesses make less than $500 a month.
In fact, numerous affiliates never see their first check before they throw in the towel.
E-commerce for the rest of us has become e-commerce for the best of us
Why?
The easy answer is they do it wrong. Most affiliates run their affiliate marketing businesses wrong from the very first day of start up.
Now, affiliate marketing does produce high income earners– people who earn $140,000 or more a year and others who earn full time incomes of 50, 000 or more. However, the vast majority simply fails to earn.
Here are some of the key reasons affiliate marketing businesses fail.
1. Failure to prepare. Lack of research about the business of affiliate marketing, your niche and the affiliate program all contribute to early failure. The over excitement, and lack of knowledge, cause people to jump at anything and act before they think.
Doing feels productive. Planning doesn’t. Even if we do not know what we’re doing we feel better about ourselves when we are doing something. However, being underprepared causes the potentially successful to become unsuccessful. Curb your enthusiasm and do your planning.
-Develop a strong web concept/theme
-Select the best affiliate programs
-Get to know your competition
Yes it’s boring, but it’s better than closing up shop after a year.
2. Poor quality traffic. Most affiliates think if they build a website they will come. Not so. Having a website doesn’t mean you will receive quality traffic. I say “quality” because not all traffic is beneficial to you. You site needs quality traffic that will do more than just browse.
To become part of the top 3% of affiliate marketing businesses you want to:
-Create content that is attractive to search engines
-Track how each page performs and how each page ranks
-Analyze Click in and Click through patterns
-Use more than one traffic generation method
-Be consistent. You can’t generate constant flow of traffic with a “stop-and-go” work method.
3. Dependency on Merchants: It is very helpful that your merchant has banners for you. However, most merchants stop there. They don’t offer any startup training or any new ideas for their affiliates. Tis happens with both good and bad companies.
The best way to avoid merchant dependency is to go beyond affiliate marketing. You can not expect the affiliate merchant to teach you everything; it’s your job to educate yourself. Ignore the marketing material and learn how to do it right on your own. This is what super affiliates do.
Affiliate marketing businesses aren’t destined to fail. You can keep yours from doing so by considering the tips above.
Achieve Affiliate Marketing Success With Article Marketing
January 30, 2009 by cynthia · Leave a Comment
Article marketing is not only a free, yet highly effective way to market an affiliate marketing business but it is a long-term internet marketing method as your articles will remain on the web for years.
Most people are searching for information online and articles certainly provide this if they are written to serve real people and not the search engines.
These are some of the qualities your affiliate marketing articles should contain to provide the best profits for you, without sacrificing your potential customers’ trust.
1. Make your articles informative
Your aim is to provide prospects with information at the click of a button. Due to the impatient nature of most online surfers keep your articles concise and focus on the product features and benefits your readers would most probably want to know about. Write in such a way that your readers want to click on the link in your resource box to find out more.
Place yourself in your prospects’ shoes and try to imagine what sort of information they want to get from your articles.
2. Write quality articles
You do not have to be a great author to write quality articles. By doing a little research and drawing on your own experiences you can write quality articles that your readers will benefit from. Remember quality and not quantity will be best for your affiliate marketing business.
3. Make your readers remember you
Have you been to a huge party lately? How many names do you remember? I bet you remember who impressed you the most though and who was the life and soul of the party. Leave the same impression with your articles. Make your articles stand out in the crowd, adding a little humor can help in making your affiliate marketing prospects remember you.
4. Submit your articles to the Article Directories
This may be the fastest way to get your articles read by as many people as possible, so all the more reason to write good quality informative articles that deserve that much exposure. You don’t want a badly written article, with your name in the resource box, posted all over the internet do you? Article marketing is a great way to build your reputation, so don’t jeopardize that opportunity by posting hundreds of useless words online.
5. Optimize your articles for the search engines.
To get your quality articles read they need to be found on the internet. Make your articles easier to find by researching keywords to find those that people are most likely to enter when searching for your product information. Then place the keywords in the title, a couple of times in the body of the article and in the resource box.
It has become much easier to achieve Affiliate marketing success with the aid of article marketing. If you choose article marketing as one of your main methods to promote your affiliate marketing business, follow the tips above and commit to writing and submitting quality articles on a regular basis.
How Does Affiliate Marketing Work
January 28, 2009 by jschuman · Leave a Comment
The method of promoting an online business in which an affiliate earns a commission for each action a visitor takes on the merchant’s website is known as affiliate marketing.
An affiliate may be rewarded for each customer sale (pay-per -sale, subscriber (pay-per-lead), or visit (pay-per click). The merchant decides the value rewarded for the action.
Sites like Amazon.com have decided to run their affiliate program directly from their website. Others use a third party service like Commission Junction (cj.com) or Linkshare.com to track affiliate links and sales.
How does affiliate marketing work?
Signing up for the program
An affiliate can sign up for a merchant’s program either directly on the merchant’s site, if that is where they run the program, or through the third party intermediary. Most affiliate programs are free. Because of spamming. and to insure the affiliate’s site matches the merchant’s, some merchants will now investigate the affiliate’s site before they allow them to join their affiliate program.
It is not unusual for a merchant to decide against allowing someone into the program. They may not have enough traffic or their site may not relate to their own.
Your Affiliate ID
If the merchant accepts the affiliate, the affiliate is then given an affiliate ID or code that allows them to promote the website. This ID is found on all marketing and promotional tools offered by the merchant including banners, text links, and graphics. Some merchants allow the affiliate to customize their link by adding their own name.
Because this ID is found on all the marketing tools, an affiliate simply needs to place their banner or text link on their website or blog and then drive traffic to the site.
Earning your commission
When a visitor to the affiliate’s site clicks the banner, and then completes the action required, the affiliate would then earn a commission. The best way to describe this is if the affiliate was a car salesman, and someone bought a car they would earn a commission. Online though, an affiliate can earn a commission for generating a lead or sending a visitor to the merchant’s site.
The visitor must complete the action in order to receive the reward. It is important that the affiliate understands what they are being paid for.
The merchant will then give you a commission for the action completed. The commission rates vary depending on the merchant. Because there are so many affiliate programs on the web now, many merchants offer commission of 50% or higher in order to keep up with competition.
Some affiliate programs offer recurring commissions in which an affiliate would be rewarded for future sales as well. For instance, if the affiliate was part of a magazine site they would receive a commission every time their past subscribers renewed their subscription.
There are also tier programs. This works on recruiting new members into the program. When someone you referred makes a sale you earn from their commission as well.
Merchants are offering more ways for affiliates to earn such as, earning for offline sales and offering more marketing material for their affiliates.
To sum it up, affiliate marketing works by the affiliate aligning themselves between merchants and customers. When an action is completed, via the affiliate ID, the affiliate earns a commission.
Affiliate Marketing Can You Really Make Money
January 25, 2009 by jschuman · Leave a Comment
When it comes to making money online Affiliate marketing is one of the most uncomplicated methods. If this is the case then why are so many affiliate marketers frustrated.
A recent holiday study shows that online shopping has increased by 12% and is expected to grow through 2009. If the profit potential has increased, why are so many affiliates wondering, “How can one make money with affiliate marketing?”
Is it even possible anymore?
It is possible, and in fact people are seeing a growth in affiliate marketing sales. But those that are approach affiliate marketing a little differently than those who seem to be struggling.
Here are five things you can do to make money with affiliate marketing.
1. Look carefully at trends. They way people spend money changes over time; products and services that were in great demand one year may no longer meet the needs of consumers.
You should keep your eyes and ears open to consumer and economic trends to get an understanding of how and where people are spending their money. A walk through a book store and browsing through blogs and forums will alert you to what consumers are spending their time and money on. This is beneficial when choosing affiliate programs.
2. Take consumer reviews seriously. Marketers and advertisers don’t have as much power as they did several years ago. A simple ad won’t help with affiliate marketing they way it used to, but a consumer review can.
Check out recent consumer reviews before you sign up for an affiliate program. Once you sign up be sure to ask your list for reviews as part of your marketing campaign. A great place to look for and ask for consumer reviews are forums and social networking sites.
3. Build your list. As the market evolves, it is going to be extremely difficult for you to make money with affiliate marketing without a list.
Not just any list however, but a responsive one. You want a group of people who take what you say seriously. This means you need to apply your efforts into building trust.
As an affiliate marketer you simply guide people to useful resources. However, they should have confidence in your suggestion in order for people to complete the sale.
4. Conduct more surveys. Those who actually make money with affiliate marketing know their consumer. They understand their needs and are better able to deliver.
Surveys and polls are perhaps the best way for affiliate marketers to find out what their past and future customers want. Whether the survey regards a product review or opinions about how you’re performing, the results reveal valuable insight into how to run your business more effectively.
5. Team up. It is becoming gradually more challenging for one to make money with affiliate marketing on their own.
More work is now required to outshine your competition and more motivation is needed to do this work. It is easier to complete your ever growing to do list when working with someone or with a group.
You may decide to outsource tasks, collaborate with others in your industry or work with a business coach, but it is recommended that you find ways to use the skills of others.
How can one make money with affiliate marketing? You can make money with affiliate marketing with a lot less frustration by understanding trends and your target market, building a responsive list, and leveraging the skills of others.

Business Coaching Statistics: Is it Worthwhile
January 20, 2009 by jschuman · Leave a Comment
To be able to successfully work alone, in isolation, will become more difficult according to recent studies. The need for an external perspective becomes more necessary to help you through the challenging journey, as the market becomes more competitive and evolving
Statistics on business coaching have proved that using a business coach can increase your profit margin by an average of 46 percent, according to a practice development company. However, further statistics show 42 percent of businesses of do not use a business coach.
The pros of using business coaching often outweigh the financial con. They give guidance and a structured plan.
They also give you an outside view of how your business is running. It causes them to fall behind their competition because this is something many business owners never learn.
To get a sense of how valuable coaching is for businesses, the International Coach Federation surveyed 210 coaching clients for demographic data and feedback /opinions about the value and use of coaching. Some of the statistics on business coaching they gathered are as follows.
70% believed business coaching is “very valuable.”
50% confide in their coach as much as their best friend, spouse or therapist, 12% confide in their coach more than anyone else.
Some of the outcomes were:
62.4% smarter goal-setting
60.5% more balanced life
57.1% lower stress levels
52.4% more self-confidence
43.3% improvement in quality of life
25.7% more income
It’s important to note with this study that of the respondents, 197 were employed professionals. All had a formal, on-going relationship with a coach with an average duration of 9 months. Over 80% of the respondents had undergraduate degrees and over a third had Master’s degrees or higher.
Business coaching isn’t just for people who have no grasp on what they are doing. It’s effective for anyone who wants to better manage their personal and professional life. Even those who think they have everything under control can learn something.
People don’t just use business coaching to make more money as the statistics on business coaching show. They use it to improve the overall quality of their life.
They learn time management skills, stress reduction techniques, acquire financial education and more. All of which help them to improve their business.
The 42 percent who are not using the guidance of a business coach are at risk of being left behind, regardless of how proficient they are in running a business. Their competition will increase their skill level by improving on their weaknesses and building on their strengths.
Thus, while those who are without coaches may feel as though they are operating at an acceptable level, it is only a matter of time before their competition outshines them.
A 46% profit increase is nothing to laugh at. If your business is struggling it helps you to survive and if you are already doing well then you simply thrive.
The statistics on business coaching reveal that those who do use coaches do improve their chances of success in one way or another. By allowing an external perceptive in you gain the opportunity to receive guidance and advice you may not have conceived to look for.
In this every changing, increasingly challenging market, having a business coach is a worthwhile investment.

Using Testimonials To Promote Your Niche Affiliate Marketing Business
January 13, 2009 by cynthia · Leave a Comment
Testimonials are a very powerful way to promote products on your niche affiliate marketing business site, so let’s find out how to use them and why they work.
A good word spoken can be very powerful. Wouldn’t you rather buy a product or use a service that has been personally recommended to you? Or wouldn’t you rather try one that has received great reviews, even if you’ve never heard of it before? I am sure your answer is “yes” to both questions illustrating the power of testimonials when used in promoting a niche affiliate marketing business.
Nowadays you will find that testimonials are a common strategy for building credibility and generating excitement about a product or service. Corporations worldwide spend billions harnessing the power of a good word alone. You will find in affiliate marketing that testimonials are regularly used to promote a niche affiliate marketing business, to attract new recruits and customers as well as compete with the opposition. Have you noticed all those testimonials that often appear on sales pages?
So why do affiliate marketers use testimonials?
Testimonials are used to try to influence consumers’ buying decisions and behavior when they visit a niche affiliate marketing business. This is why you will often see carefully chosen testimonials on their home page for visitors to view.
You may have noticed that some of the larger affiliate companies will use testimonials from famous personalities. However, not all affiliate companies can afford to do this so they invite their customers and members to submit testimonials based on their successful experience of the product, which can be just as if not more effective than those of the celebrities.
Promoting a niche affiliate marketing business using the power of testimonials
You will need to build credibility in your niche and this can be done by employing careful strategies:
Testimonial Specifics
If testimonials are expressed in more detail they will exhibit much more power in promoting your niche affiliate marketing business. Rather than just quoting a customer stating that the product is “highly effective”, follow this up by displaying the benefits and features of the product.
Customer Skepticism
When used with testimonials for promoting your niche affiliate marketing business skepticism can do a great deal of good. We’re talking about words such as, ‘I really wasn’t convinced at first, BUT…’ or ’I have always used a very popular product and never intended changing to another brand, but your product has benefits that have proven to me it is so much better.’
A testimonial that contains an objection can certainly be quite powerful if it is followed by a positive statement.
Use Genuine Testimonials
Don’t jeopardize your credibility by using fake testimonials. You are likely to get found out, and you will lose your credibility when negative comments about you start flying around the internet. A discredited affiliate internet marketer is certainly not something you want to become.
Good Words are Powerful
You need to be selective with your choice of testimonials. When used for promoting your niche affiliate marketing business they can be quite powerful but don’t over use them. Select well-written and detailed testimonials or you could take the best sentences and phrases and post them as a paragraph on your website.
The Freedom of Affiliate Marketing
January 13, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Affiliate marketing is undoubtedly the easiest and least burdensome way for any newcomer to Internet business to get started.
If you’re like many interested in starting a work at home business you will be searching for freedom from the daily grind of the 9-5 grind and rat race.
Affiliate marketing offers more freedom than regular product based Internet businesses. Here are some of the main reasons why:
- You don’t have to worry about product delivery - Working as an affiliate marketer, for those that aren’t familiar with what that entails, means selling other merchant’s products or services – as an agent. So the job of delivering the product or service is entirely the responsibility of the owner, freeing you up to concentrate on marketing.
- After sales support is out of your hands too - Obviously, as you don’t actually own the product all support requests or queries can be directed to the merchants support team or website. This undoubtedly gives you more freedom to make more money or spend time doing the things you enjoy.
- You are not limited to promote one product or company - As an affiliate marketer you are free to sign-up for as many companies and to promote as many different products and services as you desire. This obviously gives you a lot of freedom of choice and because affiliate programs are free to join, the only thing you have to lose is time, if you find you no longer want to promote a certain product or company and move on to another.
- Work your own hours - More than any other Internet business and certainly more-so than an offline job you can work your own hours. You can take days off when you like and if you’re successful enough can come home to multiple checks in the mail. Having to cover product support may curtail your ability to do this outside of affiliate marketing.
All in all any Internet business should bring a lot more freedom to do the things in life that you are passionate about. Most don’t find this in their regular jobs. The come online to pursue that dream. Those that are persistent and put in plenty of hard work, especially in the initial months, go on to achieve their financial and life goals.
Without the freedom that affiliate marketing it would be a pointless pursuit. Why trade in the confines of an offline career in order to be chained to the PC or laptop 18 hrs per day.
