Tips For Increasing Affiliate Commissions

August 9, 2009 by jcasmer · 1 Comment

There are a number of ways to increase sales for your affiliate marketing program. You can look for more products that compliment the ones you are already selling, concentrate on driving more traffic, and improve the navigation on your website.

Many affiliate marketers are already doing these and are seeing an increase in sales, but can you earn even more in your affiliate program without focusing on traffic or even your consumer?

An affiliate marketer can improve their business by going to the source, your merchant. If you have a consistent pattern of turning prospects into buyers, and a strong following on your website, than why not use this to your advantage.

Here are some affiliate marketing tips for increasing your commissions and affiliate business.

Start by doing the number one thing most affiliate never even consider doing ?ask! Just like how you would ask for a raise or promotion in a job, you can ask your merchant for an increase in commissions; it?s not off limits.

Remember never feel like you owe your merchant something because there are hundreds of similar programs on the web. When you make a sale, not only are you earning but your merchant is as well.

Thus affiliates who perform above average are a merchant?s dream and usually a merchant is willing to increase commissions for affiliates who generate large sales. However, in order to properly negotiate consider these affiliate marketing tips.

1. Know the market. What are other affiliate merchants offering in similar niches? Start browsing sites like clickbank.com, cj.com and other third party affiliate sites to find out what you can expect in the market today.

You may also want to contact other merchants to find out how much he would be willing to offer a top performer. Even if you are not looking to switch programs or add a new one, it?s good to know what a fair and competitive commission rates are.

2. Ensure your value is known. It is a waste of time to ask for a commission increase without solid evidence. Your merchant needs to know you deserve it. You need him to know you are an asset to his business.

If the merchant has a forum, give those in the program your advice and help. Be sure to keep track of your sales. How many are you producing a month, and how far apart are they.

Have a chart that you can send your affiliate merchant. Also be sure to mention your sites ranking as well as the number of backlinks you have for each search engine; how many subscribers you have for your ezine, and the number of unique visitors you recieve per day. The more facts and figures you have, the easier it is to prove to your merchant that you are an asset and deserve a commission increase.

If you are putting in all the efforts to build a successful affiliate marketing business and are seeing an increased rate of profits then consider asking your merchant for an increase in commissions. Use the affiliate marketing tips above to help you make the negotiation process easier.

Affiliate Marketing Are you Failing

February 16, 2009 by jschuman · Leave a Comment

jeffschuman1 Chances are you are not making any money at affiliate marketing, or maybe you are not making as much as you want.

This does not mean you are a faliure, but it does mean you do not understand how to target the right market with the right product. The average affiliate marketer will scan the net for an affiliate program in their niche that offers the highest commissions.

They may research the legitimacy of the program and search for a few reviews from other affiliates but the research stops there. Over 90% of affiliates do not understand their products or target market.Affiliate marketing is suppose to be simple and to keep it simple affiliates tell themselves, “if I can generate traffic, I can make money doing this”. What ends up happening is this:

John is an affiliate for a dating site. This site is catered to an older audience looking for long term relationships. John only knows that they site has high payouts and is in a niche that he thinks he some knowledge in.

When John creates his marketing campaigns, they are an assortment of information for anyone looking for a relationship. His articles aren’t highly targeted to his market, his PPC campaigns don’t resource the right keywords, and his website isn’t properly optimized.

Sally comes across John’s banner ad, clicks on it and goes to the merchants marketing site, after a few seconds she leaves.

John has failed to convert a visitor into a customer. Is this the merchant’s fault? No, it is John’s because Sally is a 25 year old who simply wants to meet new people. John isn’t reaching the right target market.

Another common example is promoting a product for the wrong budget group. Let’s say John is able to reach people who are in the right age group. But he still cannot make the sale. This dating site is priced for people with high budgets and John is creating marketing campaigns that appeal to those with low budgets. Once again he is missing the mark.

Affiliate marketing is about more than just driving traffic to the merchant’s site. It’s about understanding what the merchant is offering, so you know the key features and benefits to highlight and who would be interested in it.

One way to do this is to test the product or service. It’s important that you get a consumer’s perspective on what the merchant is offering. Did you suit you? Would it suit people like you? Testing the product or service lets you see firsthand what others who buy it will. You may use it and realize it is not something you want to promote. Or you may think it’s a great product for people who belong to certain groups.

Another thing you should do is communicate with the merchant. Talk directly to the merchant by going beyond the sales page. He can give you insider information on the product because he created it. He can also tell you who he made the product for – who he thinks would benefit best from the product.

By knowing the product, you can determine the merchant’s unique selling point and therefore find the target market that would be desperate for the product.

If you are struggling to generate sales with affiliate marketing it may not be the merchant’s fault. It could be because you are not promoting it effectively because you haven’t taken the time to understand the business you are promoting.

Why Most Affiliate Marketing Businesses Fail

January 31, 2009 by jschuman · Leave a Comment

jeffschuman1

Affiliate marketing businesses are what I like to call ecommerce for the rest of us. They are high profit and low risk monetization methods for websites.

- You don’t have to develop your own product.
- You don’t handle shipping and handling.
- You don’t have to take stock of inventory or manage a store.
- You don’t have to handle customer services.

The best part is they can be started and operated on a shoestring budget.

Perhaps the most widely adopted business model is affiliate marketing. According to a recent Forrester Research Inc survey, nearly 80% of online merchants actively use affiliate marketing.  However, despite its popularity and simplicity, the sad fact is most affiliate businesses make less than $500 a month.

In fact, numerous affiliates never see their first check before they throw in the towel.

E-commerce for the rest of us has become e-commerce for the best of us

Why?

The easy answer is they do it wrong. Most affiliates run their affiliate marketing businesses wrong from the very first day of start up.

Now, affiliate marketing does produce high income earners– people who earn $140,000 or more a year and others who earn full time incomes of 50, 000 or more. However, the vast majority simply fails to earn.

Here are some of the key reasons affiliate marketing businesses fail.

1. Failure to prepare. Lack of research about the business of affiliate marketing, your niche and the affiliate program all contribute to early failure. The over excitement, and lack of knowledge, cause people to jump at anything and act before they think.

Doing feels productive. Planning doesn’t. Even if we do not know what we’re doing we feel better about ourselves when we are doing something. However, being underprepared causes the potentially successful to become unsuccessful. Curb your enthusiasm and do your planning.

-Develop a strong web concept/theme
-Select the best affiliate programs
-Get to know your competition

Yes it’s boring, but it’s better than closing up shop after a year.

2. Poor quality traffic. Most affiliates think if they build a website they will come. Not so. Having a website doesn’t mean you will receive quality traffic. I say “quality” because not all traffic is beneficial to you. You site needs quality traffic that will do more than just browse.

To become part of the top 3% of affiliate marketing businesses you want to:

-Create content that is attractive to search engines
-Track how each page performs and how each page ranks
-Analyze Click in and Click through patterns
-Use more than one traffic generation method
-Be consistent. You can’t generate constant flow of traffic with a “stop-and-go” work method.

3. Dependency on Merchants: It is very helpful that your merchant has banners for you. However, most merchants stop there. They don’t offer any startup training or any new ideas for their affiliates. Tis happens with both good and bad companies.

The best way to avoid merchant dependency is to go beyond affiliate marketing. You can not expect the affiliate merchant to teach you everything; it’s your job to educate yourself. Ignore the marketing material and learn how to do it right on your own. This is what super affiliates do.

Affiliate marketing businesses aren’t destined to fail. You can keep yours from doing so by considering the tips above.

Affiliate Marketing Can You Really Make Money

January 25, 2009 by jschuman · Leave a Comment

When it comes to making money online Affiliate marketing is one of the most uncomplicated methods. If this is the case then why are so many affiliate marketers frustrated.

A recent holiday study shows that online shopping has increased by 12% and is expected to grow through 2009. If the profit potential has increased, why are so many affiliates wondering, “How can one make money with affiliate marketing?”

Is it even possible anymore?

It is possible, and in fact people are seeing a growth in affiliate marketing sales. But those that are approach affiliate marketing a little differently than those who seem to be struggling.

Here are five things you can do to make money with affiliate marketing.

1. Look carefully at trends. They way people spend money changes over time; products and services that were in great demand one year may no longer meet the needs of consumers.

You should keep your eyes and ears open to consumer and economic trends to get an understanding of how and where people are spending their money. A walk through a book store and browsing through blogs and forums will alert you to what consumers are spending their time and money on. This is beneficial when choosing affiliate programs.

2. Take consumer reviews seriously. Marketers and advertisers don’t have as much power as they did several years ago. A simple ad won’t help with affiliate marketing they way it used to, but a consumer review can.

Check out recent consumer reviews before you sign up for an affiliate program. Once you sign up be sure to ask your list for reviews as part of your marketing campaign. A great place to look for and ask for consumer reviews are forums and social networking sites.

3. Build your list. As the market evolves, it is going to be extremely difficult for you to make money with affiliate marketing without a list.

Not just any list however, but a responsive one. You want a group of people who take what you say seriously. This means you need to apply your efforts into building trust.

As an affiliate marketer you simply guide people to useful resources. However, they should have confidence in your suggestion in order for people to complete the sale.

4. Conduct more surveys. Those who actually make money with affiliate marketing know their consumer. They understand their needs and are better able to deliver.

Surveys and polls are perhaps the best way for affiliate marketers to find out what their past and future customers want. Whether the survey regards a product review or opinions about how you’re performing, the results reveal valuable insight into how to run your business more effectively.

5. Team up. It is becoming gradually more challenging for one to make money with affiliate marketing on their own.

More work is now required to outshine your competition and more motivation is needed to do this work. It is easier to complete your ever growing to do list when working with someone or with a group.

You may decide to outsource tasks, collaborate with others in your industry or work with a business coach, but it is recommended that you find ways to use the skills of others.

How can one make money with affiliate marketing? You can make money with affiliate marketing with a lot less frustration by understanding trends and your target market, building a responsive list, and leveraging the skills of others.

The Freedom of Affiliate Marketing

January 13, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment

Affiliate marketing is undoubtedly the easiest and least burdensome way for any newcomer to Internet business to get started.

If you’re like many interested in starting a work at home business you will be searching for freedom from the daily grind of the 9-5 grind and rat race.

Affiliate marketing offers more freedom than regular product based Internet businesses. Here are some of the main reasons why:

  1. You don’t have to worry about product delivery - Working as an affiliate marketer, for those that aren’t familiar with what that entails, means selling other merchant’s products or services – as an agent. So the job of delivering the product or service is entirely the responsibility of the owner, freeing you up to concentrate on marketing.
  2. After sales support is out of your hands too - Obviously, as you don’t actually own the product all support requests or queries can be directed to the merchants support team or website. This undoubtedly gives you more freedom to make more money or spend time doing the things you enjoy.
  3. You are not limited to promote one product or company - As an affiliate marketer you are free to sign-up for as many companies and to promote as many different products and services as you desire. This obviously gives you a lot of freedom of choice and because affiliate programs are free to join, the only thing you have to lose is time, if you find you no longer want to promote a certain product or company and move on to another.
  4. Work your own hours - More than any other Internet business and certainly more-so than an offline job you can work your own hours. You can take days off when you like and if you’re successful enough can come home to multiple checks in the mail. Having to cover product support may curtail your ability to do this outside of affiliate marketing.

All in all any Internet business should bring a lot more freedom to do the things in life that you are passionate about. Most don’t find this in their regular jobs. The come online to pursue that dream. Those that are persistent and put in plenty of hard work, especially in the initial months, go on to achieve their financial and life goals.

Without the freedom that affiliate marketing it would be a pointless pursuit. Why trade in the confines of an offline career in order to be chained to the PC or laptop 18 hrs per day.
